SOC 352 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sting Operation, Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Online Predator
Document Summary
When sex offenders first made an appearance in society, avoiding them was simpler: don"t go outside alone at night, stay away from the white vans, and don"t help a stranger look for his puppy. Kids in the 21st century have it much more difficult, as sex offenders are finding ways to exploit the internet and social media websites for their personal gain. Recent research indicates that 72% of young adults have a social networking profile and nearly 47% have a public profile viewable by anyone. (internetsafety101. org) This research also states that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused online before adulthood. Since 1998, over two million reports of child sexual exploitation have been reported to the cybertipline (missingkids. com). With the internet growing as rapidly as it has in recent years, a new era of criminals has been born. The primary and most effective new way law enforcement is catching these criminals is through impersonation.
