Document Summary

There"s inadequate information about ancient greece and rome. Greece and rome are the founders of western civilization. The ancient world is on the other side of the "big change," which occurred around 1800: benjamin constant gave a lecture claiming that, in the past, we looked to greece and rome and tried to emulate them. But we can"t be like them anymore, and attempting to be like them leads to things like the french revolution. This is because society is fundamentally different than it was in ancient times. In the past, people believed they would prosper via war. The real way to success is commerce, and modern society revolves around commerce. In the modern world, people want individual liberty. They want to be left alone by the state so they can make money: war is no longer a primary activity, it is a secondary activity, war is no longer the way that you prove yourself.
