The helvetii (gauls) ask for permission to move westward, but the romans say no, starting a war: caesar and the romans defeat the gauls. Caesar wanted to engage in war with the gauls: may have been a preventative war - prevent gauls from attacking italy/rome, may have been out of caesar"s ambition. Caesar claims that the belgian gauls were the best at fighting/toughest. Gauls lack roman discipline and organization - couldn"t compete with the romans.
