Document Summary

Benthic = the seafloor environment; including coral reefs and rocky intertidal. Plankton = unable to swim horizontally against ocean currents, but may move vertically in the water column (phytoplankton, zooplankton) Nekton = able to swim against ocean currents (eg. fish, squid, sea turtles) Holoplankton = planktonic organism that live their entire life in fluid suspension (copepods, shrimp, arrow worms, some jellyfish) Meroplankton = planktonic organisms that spend only part of their life in fluid suspension (crabs, barnacles, oysters, fish larvae) Autotrophs = organisms whose energy/carbon for growth comes from non-organic sources (eg. phytoplankton because they use sunlight and co2 for their energy/carbon needs) - if you have chlorophyll. Heterotrophs = organisms whose energy/carbon for growth comes from previously formed organic carbon materials (eg. if they eat other plants/animals) Tropic level = nutritional feeding level within a food chain/web. Primary consumer (i. e. autotrophs), primary consumer (herbivore), secondary consumer (first ca(cid:396)(cid:374)ivo(cid:396)e(cid:895), te(cid:396)ia(cid:396)y co(cid:374)su(cid:373)e(cid:396) (cid:894)seco(cid:374)d ca(cid:396)(cid:374)ivo(cid:396)e(cid:895), etc .
