FGSS 2140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Sertoli Cell, Scientific Method, Vas Deferens
Document Summary
Reproductive tract: differentiation of sex accessory structures in embryos. Changes in childhood of reproductive hormones: during puberty Basic pattern, tweaked in a slightly different direction. Both males and females take similar paths to produce estrogen. Geared to particular endpoints (sperm or eggs) Surge of hormones in females causes ovulation estradiol barely detectable in early childhood, slowly rises with puberty we begin to see hormones act in an adult pattern. Lh and testosterone occur about every 4-6 hours, in a pulsatone manner. Female: two hormones theca: cholesterol, converted to androgens that diffuse to nearby granulosa cells and serve as precursors to estrodial leydig: take cholesterol, convert to androgens, to estrodial: granulosa > estrodial, sertoli cells > estrodial. This is a main question of the course: nature vs. nurture. Some are culturally determined physical (size, strength, susceptibility to disease) behavioral (aggressive, mood, emotion, parenting) intelligence, cognitive abilities.
