PHIL 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: T-Shirt, Compatibilism, Supererogation
Document Summary
The causal impacts on a person do not settle what that person is like or what choices they make. The causal chain from our own psychological state to our decision is also indeterministic. The second claim is strange and threatens to undermine free will. Doesn"t this return back to holbach"s theory of randomness. Must view people as being quite different than other organisms/objects in the world. Chisolm: we are restrained by the laws of nature, yet not controlled by the laws of nature. Very little evidence/support; does not argue or explain that it is true. It seems more like the ideal rather than the reality. Just saying that we are free and not arguing for it or explaining how. Vaninwagen: compatibilist isn"t right but neither is agent causation. Moral: i don"t know what the fuck is going on. Is an indeterminist, believes we have free will and compatibilism is hoeless.
