PSYCH 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Long-Term Memory, Autobiographical Memory, Sensory Memory
Document Summary
Some people have extreme autobiographical memory and can remember nearly every thing that has happened to them. Sensory input becomes sensory memory (shorter than short term memory) Example: when you hear someone cough, you are aware of it, but quickly forget if you are not thinking about it. Short term memory is reinforced through maintenance rehearsal. Short term memory is encoded into long term memory. Some long term memory is lost over time. We don"t yet know the capacity of long term memory. Long term memories are retrieved and become short term memory. Acts as a filter for input that becomes memory. Weapon focus phenomenon: people are uncontrollably drawn to the appearance of a weapon during crimes that they forget other stimuli (appearance of a suspect) Dichotic listening involves playing different noises to each ear. People can choose which one they attend to. Information from only one ear can be encoded at any time.
