PSYCH 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Richard Feynman, Steven Pinker, Falsifiability
Document Summary
Science- a method for arriving at knowledge about the natural world, describing it accurately, and explaining why things are they way that they are. Steven pinker- (scientific explanation) gives a description of how to explain something, to explain something is to appeal to the systems that cause it. Richard feynman- lectured at cornell on scientific method. If not, reject theory: repeat, share, refine. Can be problematic in practice: but it works better than anything else. Scientists ignoring inconsistent data/publishing only results that agree. There are likely just as many methods as there are topics. Sam gosling- psychologist who observed dorm rooms to find differences. Example (does it take longer to pee when guys are around) in 1977 middlemist, knowles, matter. Not ethical because they weren"t aware of the researcher. Social desirability- saying what you think people want to hear. Lack of insight/access to info being studied (like how smart are you? )
