Consists of social actors and social products. 8/29 reading: what is a social fact by turner and beeghley (1981) Social fact according to durkheim: consists of ways of acting, thinking, and feeling, external to the individual, and endowed with the power of coercion, by which they control him . Focus of sociology: morphological and symbolic structures in which individuals participate. Feeling something outside of them, because of living with established set of structures and existing values. Each individual becomes external to other people. When social facts become internalized, people want to be a part of the structures and follow norms. When individuals come into collaboration, a new reality consisting of social and symbolic structures emerges. 8/29 reading 2: getting in : the social logic of ivy league admissions by malcolm. Admissions at hyp schools decided to change the definition of merit because of having too many jewish students at their schools.
