Law does not codify all ethical requirements. Compliance w/ the law is not always sufficient to determine the right behaviour. Laws have to be general enough to apply in variety of circumstances. The moral minimum: the minimum level of ethical behaviour expected by society, which is usually defined as compliance with the law. Study of ethics goes beyond legal requirements to evaluate what is right for society. Company codes are not laws rules company sets forth and can enforce. Codes of conduct outline the company"s policies on particular issues and indicate how employees are expected to act. Industries also develop codes of ethics: the american institute of certified public accountants: professional conduct for practicing of accounting, the american bar association: professional conduct for attorneys, the american nurses association: code of ethics that applies to nurses.
