Dualism: descartes saw soul as being divine & independent of everything else. Separated human soul from rest of universe like done before by plato & catholic church: human thoughts & feelings couldn"t be studied by natural sciences, fell under remit of philosophy & religion. Central within religions & in descartes" view. Only exception descartes made to the mechanistic world was the human soul. Descartes" proposal that soul could influence body via pineal gland was unconvincing. Soul" got dragged into the mechanical part of the universe & became subject of natural investigations too. Why is the earth orbiting the sun: the question why planets orbited the sun & why some planets were orbited by one or more moons was one of the big mystery of heliocentric universe. In aristotelian universe, there were only 2 natural" movements: downwards to the centre of earth (earth & water, upwards to the edge of sub-lunar region (fire & air)
