Mandatory these women aren"t choosing tobe circumcised (sometimes), whereas people who get piercings or tattoos are choosing. Restrictive reduces pleasure? (sometimes not); reinforces male patriarchy over women; restrictive to women"s expression of sexuality. Women in these cultures do not feel oppressed by this tradition; they see it as a right of passage in their community. Depends on which cultural perspective you"re looking at it from. Anthropologists who study a specific culture for extended periods of time have values that are simpatico to the culture being studied. Lengthy stays in the field (periods of time) Participant-observer status very important not to just observe people but to also participate in their culture for better understanding of it, becomes apart of your own ethnography. Final results: an ethnography of the culture give you a complete picture of most days of life in a culture art, politics, religion, family values, etc.
