A shared experience of structural violence can unite people at the bottom of a hierarchy in a common struggle for social justice. Struggles over division of labor: *reforms caste system in south & east asia. Struggles over ethnic & racial division: *american civil rights movement. People are born with primary sex characteristics (sex organs) Usually develop along w/ secondary sex characteristics during puberty. By birth most but not all of us will fall into the 2 traditional biological sexes. Intersex: an umbrella term describing people born w/ variations of internal and/or external sexual anatomy. Performing genital surgeries on intersex babies will allow them to lead more normal lives perform at least 8 a day wrong identity; no consent. Differences between male and female are not fixed & precise: biological tendencies not absolutes. Hijras in india (neither man or woman) ambiguous or castrated genitals, important as ritual performers have a place in society: 3rd gender politically.
