Two basic claims about the kinship system on langkawi island. Relatedness is not thought about, or discussed in reference to sexual reproduction. Discussed in terms of what they eat, and where they live. Considered to be the only real" food. Houses focus on the women (who do a lot of the cooking) People spend leisure time around the house. Construction of relatedness begins in the womb and continues until death. Children are nourished in the womb from the mother"s blood. After birth, the milk comes from the mother (this milk is believed to be derived from the blood) As they grow older the eat rice, together with other members of the household. Doing these things over a lifetime determine their relations. Blood is the source of emotional and physical connectedness. People embody the same substance through conversions of blood, milk, rice, love. People are becoming more similar by eating rice together.
