ANTH 010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Social Inequality, Pope Nicholas V, Franz Boas
Document Summary
Race is a flawed system of classification with no biological justification. It is flawed because there are no observable consistent ways to parce out people into races and it is flawed ethically because it ranks people and justifies social inequality. There is greater variation within racial groups than there is between groups. Franz boas argued that variation within groups is greater than that within groups. Humans emerged as a species in africa 200,000 years ago. Humans dispersed and this is where we see variation in looks, but genetically we really didn"t change very much. We think that our blood or genes produces outwardly into eye shape or skin color, but genotype and phenotype are two different categories. Genotype is inherited genetic factors that provide the framework for an organism"s physical form. You couldn"t vote or marry someone out of your own race. Colored and whites could work in capetown and black people couldn"t.
