ANTH 011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Parental Investment, Sexual Selection, Zygote
Document Summary
Sexual selection- special instance of natural selection and includes: Intrasex selection- same-sex competition between members of a species for access to mates. Intersex selection- discriminating preferences for particular opposite sex partners, i want that one because of his beautiful tail. Prezygotic investment- mate surge, gamete production, intercourse/gamete placement. Reproductive effort = pre + post-zygotic investment. Reproductive potential = total time and energy that could be invested. Low parental burden = more time mating; high offspring burden = lower frequency of mating. Investment is often not exactly equal between the two sexes. At any point during reproduction, the parent that invests more has more to lose. Asymmetry in reproductive potential; if there are 20 males for 1 female, males will have to complete this yields sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism- traits (such as morphology, preferences, motivations, behaviors) vary between the opposing sexes of a species.
