ANTH 011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pea, Biological Anthropology, Natural Selection
Document Summary
Evolution by natural selection if the population is variable and heritable then the next generation will look different than the previous one. Belief that the environment was important for shaping and changing things but ultimately it was the creature that changed and passed on its own traits. Belief that in any given population there are traits favored by natural selection favored characteristics are passed on to the next generation n in greater proportions than then favored traits. After many generations the group is still variable but showing a general increase. Population variable already and the population changing over time in a trait. Adaptation: changes in response to new or varying environmental pressures. Occurs in response to particular environmental conditions. Geographic isolation may be a force in the origin of species. Diversity observed among species is the result of evolutionary relatedness (time from common ancestor) and adaptation. Which type is more fit depends upon the environment.
