BIOL 030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Stratified Squamous Epithelium, Tunica Externa, Hiatus Hernia
Document Summary
Is under involuntary control, pharyngeal constrictor muscles sequentially contract superior to inferior, this phase is followed by the esophageal phase. Lined with stratified squamous epithelium, peristalsis occurs here, empties directly into cardia of stomach. Part of small intestine, organ is covered by visceral peritoneum, outermost tunic is tunica serosa, this region of the organ is intraperitoneal (i. e. found within the peritoneal cavity) Intraperitoneal covered with visceral peritoneum; suspended or associated with a double layer of peritoneum (coming from posterior wall), has outer tunica serosa. Retroperitoneal not in peritoneal cavity; covered by tunica adventitia, has no double layer of peritoneum (no greater, less omentum, mesocolon, etc. ) Epithelial lining of mucosa = stratified squamous epithelium. In mucosa, there is lamina propria = areolar ct. Submucosal glands secrete mucus/mucous rather than goblet cells doing it. Sometimes where stomach protrudes into thoracic cavity = hiatal hernia. Parietal peritoneum = covers inner wall and creates double layer at posterior wall.
