Document Summary

The innate immunity system includes inflammation and physical and chemical barriers. The innate immune system is different from the acquired immune system based on the follow characteristics: born with it, not specific, and fast response. The lymphatic system functions include, fluid balance, fat absorption, and defense. When fluid reaches the lymphatic system, it travels through vessels that: ensure one-way flow through smooth muscle and valves, allow entry of pathogens and exit of immune cells through fenestration. Lymphatic fluid is filtered to ensure that pathogens are removed before it goes back to the circulation. The tissue responsible for this function are lymph nodes and spleen. Blood contains plasma (55% of blood volume, that is mostly water and proteins) and formed elements (45% of the blood volume are cells). The cells are either white blood cells (leukocytes) or red blood cells (erythrocytes)
