Current challenges regarding organ supply and demand. Number of people w/ esrd keeps climbing each year (only recently started to taper off) Kidney transplant widely regarded as best option, but there aren"t enough. Each year: 100k start hemodialysis, 7. 5k start peritoneal, 2. 8k get transplant. Currently: 400k on hemodialysis, 30k on peritoneal, 180k living w/ transplant. Extra points for: hla matching, multi-organ need, kidz (cuz they"re cute) in illinois. 100k people currently sitting on waiting list, 4-year wait time. Average wait time is 3. 5 years (dialysis survival only 2. 5- Try to give longest lasting kidney to longest living recipient (i. e. don"t give an 80 year old a 20 year old"s kidney) Options for living donor kidney transplantation, including kidney-paired donation. Compatible donor: best option, can skip wait time/list. Donor can indicate who they want to donate to. Incompatible donor: not as ideal, but still better than dialysis.
