Birth of the earth: 4. 6 billion years ago (much older than often assumed) Homo sapiens = species to which present humans belong; started in africa some 200k years ago; nearly decimated some 100 50k years ago begin to spread to europe and asia and then to australia and america. Neolithic revolution = the transition from a nomadic hunter-gatherer society to farming and settlement around. Preliterate civilisation = civilisation before writing was invented. Myths contain important values but are often contradicting only when things become written down they show patterns etc. According to lindberg scientific thinking cannot occur without written records. Writing systems were a combination of pictograms (pictures that resemble the persons, animals and objects they represent) and phonograms (signs to represent sounds of the spoken language) Written records form an external memory, which allows an accumulation of knowledge. Readers were not encouraged to think critically about what they were reading (scholastic method) (16th century)
