Sovereignty of the people -> no group of nobles, patricians, regents possessed power of government; all public officers exercised a delegated authority within limits defined by the constitution. Introduced a new discourse of politics and a new basis for the legitimacy of the political order through democracy and popular sovereignty. Abolishment of corporate institutions, invention of tradition to establish nationalism and base the political system on the power of the people. Everything associated with absolutism, feudalism, or inherited right (except the right of property) was repudiated. The church was secularized on the basis of ideas introduced through the enlightenment and the idea that human authority was willed by god and protected by religion faded away.
