Segmental phonology: studying sounds in isolation: phonemes, allophones: complementary distribution and free variation. Suprasegmental phonology: stringing sounds together: syllable structure, phonotactic constraints, today, syllable stress, phonetics, phonology and foreign language teaching. Syllable stress: focus on word stress: what is stress, stress (accent) is the perceived prominence of or emphasis on a particular syllable relative to the syllables around it. Stress is signal by properties such as relative loudness, vowel length, vowel quality and pitch (high/low) Stress generally not predictable in english (=> learner difficulty) Distinct words: e. g. greenhouse vs. green house, e. g. darkroom vs. dark room. Morphology: the study of the internal structure of words, the rules that govern it, as well as the ways of creating new words. Are there any morphemeless words: no; a word must consist of at least one morpheme (i. e. one meaningful unit of language)
