History task 7: psychoanalysis: a new science for a new century. Insanity was due to the devil or a bad ghost. Mentally ill taken care of on informal basis, depending on family. 16th century = increased role of authorities in managing insane people. Asylums were created to confine them, where they were treated as prisoners & had a regime of forced labour and religious exercises to re-educate them into good, productive members of society. 18th century = inhabitants of asylums are not criminals but patients; began treatment with medical practices e. g. cold showers, fast spinning, or moral treatment (= persuade patient to behave normally) 19th century = educational approach dominant approach to therapy; asylums limited to handling worst cases of madness & others were treated in private settings with hypnosis. Born in austro-hungarian empire on may 6, 1856. Studied with jean charcot, french neurologist, who had been partially successful in treating hysteria through hypnosis.
