GEOG 002 Lecture 19: Geog 2 - LEC19
Document Summary
The historical geography of russia is the story of slavic expansion from its populous western heartland across interior eurasia to the east, and into the mountains and deserts of the south. This eastward march was hampered not only by vast distances but also by harsh natural conditions. As the northernmost populous country on earth, russia has virtually no natural barriers against the onslaught of arctic air. Moscow lies farther north than edmonton, canada, and st. petersburg lies at latitude 60 north the latitude of the southern tip of greenland. Winters are long, dark, and bitterly cold in most of russia; summers are short and growing seasons limited. Siberian frontier outpost was doomed by cold, snow, and hunger. It is therefore useful to view russia"s past, present, and future in the context of its climate. Even today, in this age of global warming, russia still suffers from severe cold and associated drought.
