Document Summary

Dante undergoes a journey in the afterlife. Begins with dante being lost in the forest (his fears described) Then a ghost like figure (virgil) appears and gives him some certainties. Says that this is a journey god wanted for dante so he should just follow. Then they step into a door (door of hell)- this is the journey. The inferno (hell)- a depiction of the consequences of unchecked evil. The purgatorio (purgatory)- a representation of human nature in this life (of which purgatory is an extension): the conflict between good and evil. The paradiso (heaven)- the ultimate, supernatural end of human life; the vision of god. Embodies the thomistic synthesis of greek philosophy and the biblical worldview. Virgil- symbol of reason, philosophy, classical civilization, natural (philosophical) theology. To the non-christian philosophers, the commedia promises only the cold light of limbo, where a whole philosophic family is living out an eternity of desire without hope.
