PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Pineal Gland, Psych, Wilhelm Wundt
Document Summary
The establishment of psychology as a formal, accepted, academic discipline is generally dated to 1879, when wilhelm wundt, germany, opened the first university-based psychology laboratory. Around the same time, wundt also wrote the first psychology textbook and started mentoring the first formal graduate students in psychology. Wundt"s graduates were the first individuals to receive degrees in psychology. These have been created by people who consider themselves philosophers, physicists, physiologists, and naturalists. In this section, we shall explore three basic ideas of psychology, all of which were formulated and explored prior to the establishment of psychology as a recognized scientific discipline. 1 behavior and emotional knowledge have physical triggers, and they can be used for empirical study. 2 the way a person acts, thinks, and feels is changed, over time, by the interactions of a person in his or her environment. 3 the mechanism of the body, which creates behavior and mental experience, is the result of evolution by natural selection.
