Wilhelm wundt: 1st researcher to study psychology, was a philosopher when the field was very popular, but wanted to take a more scientific look at how humans consciously see and experience their environment. Simplest and fastest of mental processes- very structured and specific. Experiment: asked participants when heard ball hit the ball or when consciously aware of hearing it. Heard hit faster, so conscious awareness takes longer to recognize. Two schools of thought emerged (late 19 early 20th cent. Structuralism: discover mind"s structure, what makes it up, by breaking down experiences into underlying components (conscious experiences). Functionalism: not enough to just break down the mind. Instead understand processes in terms of adaptation to the environment. What function or purpose does it serve/ how did it help species survive (william james) Developed psychoanalysis, in which therapists works with the patient to bring their unconscious feelings and thoughts into their conscious awareness.
