PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Positron, Psy, Psych
Document Summary
Neurological theories: both mental and behavioral experiences are the result of the nervous system. One rational route to understanding in psychology, therefore, is to seek to understand how the nervous system creates a particular form of experience or action that is being examined. Researchers specializing in this level of explanation are referred to as behavioral neuroscientists. Some behavioral neuroscientists study individual neurons (nerve cells) or small groups of neurons to determine how their characteristics contribute to particular psychological abilities, such as learning. Others map and study larger brain regions and pathways that are directly involved in a particular category of behavior or experience, such as grammatically speaking, seeing the shapes of objects, or experiencing emotions such as fear. Behavioral neuroscientists also study how hormones and drugs act on the brain to alter behavior and experience, either in humans or in non-human animals.
