Studying development - 3 debates: nature vs. nurture- heredity vs environment. Nature and nurture both influence development (interactionist view), each has degrees of influence: continuity vs stages- gradual vs major changes. Cross-sectional: different participants of various ages are compared at one point in time to determine age-related differences. Longitudinal: the same participants are studies at various ages to determine age- related changes. Culture"s ethnotheories (ideas/beliefs; expectations) are important influences of behavior- elevator, eating pig. Development has to be studied w/in sociocultural context. Chromosome (in nucleus of zygote)- all genes carrying all heredity information. Sperm and egg cells- 23 single chromosomes each. Zygote- 23 pairs of chromosomes (23 each parent) contain approx. 22 pairs of 23 pairs- genes for physical/mental trait.
