PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Echoic Memory, Iconic Memory, Sensory Memory
Document Summary
Memory: the persistence of learning over time, through storage and retrieval of information and skills. Recall is analogous to fill in the blanks yu retrieve information previously learned and unconsciously stored. You identify which stimuli match your stored information. Relearning is a measure of how much less work it takes you to learn information you had studied before, even if you don"t recall having seen the information before. Here is a simplified description of how memory works: Encoding: the information gets into our brains in a way that allows it to be stored. Storage: the info is held in a way that allows it to be later retrieved. Retrieval: reactivating and recalling the info, producing it in a form similar to what was encoded. More goes on in the short term memory besides rehearsal; this is now called working memory. Some info seems to go straight from sensory experience into long-term memory; this is automatic processing.
