PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Psych, Interference Theory
Document Summary
Research show people are better at recognizing photos of previous classmates than recalling their names. Example: scuba divers recall more words underwater if they learned the list underwater, but remembered more words on land if they learned the list on land. When your brain fails to create a memory link. Memories in ltm are temporarily not accessible. Sleep prevents interference, leads to better recall. Forgetting can occur at any memory stage. We filter, alter, or lose information during these stages. Storage decay: poor durability of stored memories leads to decay. When one memory competes (interferes) with another. 2 forms: retroactive interference: new info interferes with old info, proactive interference: old info interferes with new info. Repression: defense mechanism that gets rid of bad thoughts, feelings, and memories from consciousness. Amnesia: memory loss from brain injury or trauma. Old memories are okay, can"t form new memories. Old memories are lost, new memories are okay.
