Document Summary

Three significant events occurred in the last decade of the 19th century. These were: the discovery of x-rays by roentgen in 1895, a year later becquerel accidentally discovered radioactivity when he found that a uranium salt emitted radiation, in 1898 pierre and marie curie discovered the radioactive element radium. Later, becquerel and the curies won the nobel prize for their discovery of radioactivity. One of the early attempts to study the biological effects of radiation was that conducted by bergonie and tribondeau who in 1906 investigated the effect of x-rays on rodent testicles. In the 1920s it was recognised that x-rays could adversely affect foetal development and in 1927 muller showed that irradiating fruit flies induced mutations; hence ionising radiation is mutagenic. Later in this decade, a condition known as radium jaw" was recognised in women who painted luminous radium-based paints onto the dials of watches.
