PSY 005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Parenting Styles, Psy, Theory Of Reasoned Action
Document Summary
Socialization: the process by which infants are molded into acceptable members of their society. Parents express opinions and values that children may internalize. They model behaviour, provide much of the information that young children obtain about the world. Parenting styles influence children"s values in adulthood. Parents were classified in terms of restrictiveness and in terms of coldness. Nonrestrictive parenting was associated with children having a greater emphasis on imaginativeness and independence at age 31. Cold parenting: safety issues such as family and national security. No strong correlations between children"s" and parents" racial attitudes. Parental influence is gradually overtaken by peer influence. Reference group: a group that serves as a standard of comparison for an individual, whether in terms of attitudes, values, or behaviour. Individuals try to conform to the norms and values of their main reference groups. Celebrities serve as important referents for many young people. High school students" greatest fear was being ridiculed.
