College of the sequoias (abnormal behavior in historical context): Psychological dysfunction- refers to a breakdown in cognition, emotional, or behavioral. Phobia- a psychological disorder characterized by persistent fear of an object. Abnormal behavior- a psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress in functioning and a response that is not typical or expected. Responses that isn"t atypical or not culturally expected. Dsm"s definition of psychological dysfunction- psychological dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with present distress and impairment in functioning, or increased risk of suffering, death, pain, or impairment. Scientist-practitioners- mental health professionals that take a scientific approach to clinical work. Presenting problem- traditional shorthand way of saying why a person came to the clinic. Clinical description- the unique combo of behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that make up a specific disorder. Prevalence- how many people in the population have the disorder. Incidence- how many cases occur during a given period.
