Psychopathology requires: scientific emphasis, there are multiple, interactive influences from, biological, psychological, social. Problems related to social/family aspect of an individual. Marriage/family therapists (ma, ms, mft) & mental health counselors (ma, ms) Psychological disorder: psychological dysfunction(abnormal behavior) within an individual. Associated with stress/impairment in functioning and a not typical/culture expected response. Criteria for a psychological disorder: distress, impairment, and response that is not typical/ culturally expected. A psychological disorder can also be known as a psychological dysfunction. Psychological dysfunction: extreme expression of otherwise normal emotions, behaviors, and cognition processes. Having a dysfunction is not enough criteria for a psychological disorder. Response is not typical for culture, gender, or age. Eccentricity(some cultures view different behaviors as fine so disorders can go unnoticed that way) versus violation of social normal (different societies have different norms. ) Mental disorder: clinically significant disturbance in an individuals cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psycholgical, biological, or development processes underlying mental functioning.
