2 approaches to diagnosing psychological disorders: idiographic:if we want to determine what is unique about an individual"s personality, cultural background, or circumstances, nomothetic: the approach we follow!! Emil kraepelin under biological tradition; we assume that every diagnosis has a clear underlying pathophysiological cause; useful in medicine; led to people looking at dimensional. Does not work with mental health as people were not able to agree on how many dimension are required. Combines features from all 3; identifies certain characteristics of an entity so that you can classify allows certain nonessential variations that do not necessarily change the classification. Removed multi-axial system and introduced dimensional approach; similar to dsm- Iv- tr but many refinements in specific disorders, and some new categories and diagnoses created; some recommendations for assessment; changed numeral from roman to arabic: what organization produces. Association: understand how culture affects psychopathology and how dsm-5 deals with it.
