What are the typical problems faced by the elderly. When get ill, the illness doesn"t get away fast or not at all. Sensory acuity issue. vestibular system not functioning well, balance, disorientation. Medication issues and problems: metabolism slow, medication may cause side effect or overdose. Polypharmacy: multiple medications can interfere with each other. In terms of research methods with the elderly, Cohort effects: attitude share by your group. What"s going on with the person"s life could affect research. Single; obesity; depression; no social support; type ii diabetes. Diet; exercise; engagement in cognitive functions; education(theory: higher education, takes longer for alz to happen) Be able to differentiate the following cognitive disorders in terms of age of onset, symptoms, course, etiology, and prognosis: Comes on very quickly, seen mostly in kids. Mood swing, trouble focusing, nightmares, may delusions. Dementia: gradual beginning, word finding problems, lose control on impulse, empathy; course is progressive.
