Identify 1-3 main points of each reading
McHarg writes about the natural processes seen in the metropolitan region and how these
processes are used throughout city building. He also mentions the evolution from a simple city to
a vast metropolitan region and how this change impacts nature by using the processes and at
times wearing it down. He concludes his paper with a message of how man’s impact on nature
should be beneficial to both the natural surroundings and man itself by keeping in mind that to
keep using resources like valuable aquifers and floodplains man must protect them from their
pollution and destruction.
Identify the methods the author used to teach their conclusions
McHarg reached his conclusions through a study of the ecosystem and how cities were created
through using and incorporating nature into them. He identifies the points of disregard where
growing populations have failed at protecting the resources that are near them even though they
have been beneficial at protecting.
What did you learn from the readings
I learned about the main natural processes seen throughout cities and how they are used to
benefit the populations growing among them. McHarg emphasizes the protection of these
resources because of their value to the population. The more obvious ones being forests and
agriculture land but the ones that would not have been thought of as obvious are aquifers and
marshes, simple settings that are so beneficial to humanity.
