GEOG 329 Lecture 7: Reading Assignment 7
1. Identify three main points of each reading
The article covers the effect of careless human activity on the environment. In this
case, it must do with littering in the ocean and how it affects marine life. They
narrowed littering down to plastic debris in the oceans and how it is being eaten by
animals after the plastic has spent months in the water soaking up algae that make it
smell of fish. This absorption of the algae and its smell makes animals think the
plastic is fish and causes the animals to eat the plastic that is harmful to them.
2. Identify the methods the author used to reach their conclusion
The reading is from an article in the National Geographic magazine; the author states
that they gathered data from a research study made by Science Advances.
3. What did you learn from the readings
I found out that pollution is affecting the animals in the wild not only by polluting
their natural habitats but also by causing them to eat the litter found near their usual
eating grounds. The trash is disguised over time by smells that remind them of their
food and is, therefore, entering the animal’s digestion and getting stuck; one study
noticed that over time the material begins to smell like sulfur.
4. Identify the material you found challenging or had trouble understanding
At first, I thought that the algae were the source of the sulfur when in fact it was the
plastic.
5. Ask a question
If this is focusing on materials such as plastic what are the effects that other materials
such as aluminum cause?
