GEOG 329 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Agenda 21
1. Identify 3 main points of each reading
The first article talks about Agenda 21 a declaration for sustainable management for the
environment.
The second article focuses on environmental sustainability and how this sustainability is mostly
seen in richer neighborhoods. The authors focus on the issues that poor urban neighborhoods
face with health hazards and list the ways that these neighborhoods fall victim to neglect.
2. Identify the methods the author used to reach their conclusion
Article one is from a document based on the Agenda 21 declaration. In the second article, the
authors reference all the sources that they gathered information from, some of these include
articles from the United Nations.
3. What did you learn from the readings
Article one summarized the Agenda 21 declaration and described how countries attempted to
implement the policy. From the second article I learned about the different ways that poor urban
communities fall under neglect of any environmental sustainability, this is usually because their
neighborhoods are violent or there are biases that make urban planners not want to help these
communities.
4. Identify the material you found challenging or had trouble understanding
Article one mentions that Agenda 21 is “muted” in the 2000 period and onwards,
does this mean that the policy has not been used since then. The authors focus on the
lack of sustainability in poor neighborhoods, but would it not be easier to start
sustainability in these neighborhoods?
