Document Summary

Define and calculate mortality, case-fatality, and proportionate mortality rates. Describe years of potential life lost and its role in public health. Distinguish and calculate direct age and indirect age adjustment. Number of deaths in one year divided by the number of population at midyear. Disease/cause specific rate: used when the rate is specific to a disease: in this case, it would be number of deaths in one year from that disease divided by the population at midyear. Time can be calculated over any given period of time but must be specified. This is a percentage of people within a population that dies after a certain time following diagnosis. Number of people dying during a period of time after diagnosis/onset divided by number of individuals with the disease. Case-fatality disease also measures the severity of a disease. Measure of a mortality but not a rate.
