Document Summary

Different types of tissues specialize and form together to create organs. The specializations of these organs perform functions that help us maintain homeostasis. Tissues: similar cells that group together to perform a common action. Four types: epithelial: covers, connective: supports, muscle: movement, nervous: controls, communication. Most organs have all 4 types of tissues. Covers surfaces: forms boundaries to create an internal & external type of environment. 2 types: covering and lining epithelium: 3 types. Mesothelium: walls and organs: glandular epithelium: secretory tissue in glands. Function depends on its location: protection: skin, does not damage easily, diffusion: vessels, alveoli, gi tract, filtration: kidney, excretion, secretion: closer to skin sweat glands. Sebaceous glands: responsible for oiliness of skin: sensory reception: eyes, skin, mouth. Polarity: apical vs. basal surface: apical surface: outward or away from the body, basal surface: surface faces inward towards tissue (deep). Apical surface have microvilli and cilia: microvilli: increases surface area, cilia: function in movement.
