Document Summary

Everything the body does is in service of homeostasis. The body allows change within narrow limits: dynamic equilibrium: body has a set point; body maintains conditions along the limits around a set point, the variation about the set point is referred to as error. If body is within the limits of error range, the body is at equilibrium. Values outside of the error range are called disturbances. Autoregulation/intrinsic regulation: internal mechanisms: automatic response is built into a cell. Blood clotting; blood rushes to the site of damage containing platelets (thrombocytes) and white blood cells to fight off bacteria. Body is conservative: after a tissue is damaged, the body rebuilds the area of damage. Controlled by external sources: nervous and endocrine systems: ex. Vasoconstriction/vasodilation are triggered by nervous or endocrine system in response to an external stimuli. Sensor: receptor that detects change/stimulus: organ, cell, tissue, etc .
