Current western beauty standards equate thinness with health and beauty. There has been a rise in eating disorders in the past three decades. Two main diagnoses: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa. Age of onset is 14-20 yrs (4% (0. 5) develop full disorder) Rates are increasing in north american, japan, and europe. A normal to slightly overweight female on a successful diet. Escalation to anorexia after a stressful event (parents" divorce, major move, personal failure: weight loss perceived as reward. Most patients recover but there are recurrences. 2% to 6% seriously ill or die from medical complications or suicide. Goal for people with anorexia is being thin: the motive is fear, of becoming obese, of giving in to desire to eat, of losing control of body shape and weight. People with anorexia are preoccupied with food: they think & read about food; plan next meal, preoccupation may be due to food deprivation, ex: starvation study of conscientious objectors.
