COMM 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Meta-Communication, Reminiscing, Information Overload
Document Summary
You spend most of your time listening. You do something all the time doesn"t mean you are good at it. Listening= hearing (they are the same thing, this is not true) Skillful listetning= natural ability (listening just like all other skills that can be taught, it"s not natural) All listeners receive the same message (people hear the same message but they interpret different things) Selecting (there are a lot of sounds in your environment---> you choose which one to hear) ex: the buzzing sound of the projector, you don"t hear it because you select not to listen to it. Attending (focusing your attention to the sound) Understanding (understand what people want to say) ex: you can"t understand someone when they talk fast, talk with dialect, use big words, even though they speak english. Remembering (most people forget 50% of what you hear right after you hear it) Good listening takes work/effort/skill ( video: candy island commercial)
