- Johnny Belinda (film from 1948 and directed by Jean Negulesco)
o Town doctor died and now they have a new one who is very helpful
o Stella is the doctor’s assistant
o Locky is the town’s fisherman
o Doctor goes to someone’s house to help out their cow because she’s in labor and
in pain and notices their daughter is deaf
o Deaf girl’s mother is dead so her aunt and father are taking care of her
o Doctor goes back to the house to fish in their pond and starts teaching daughter
how to use sign language
o Father calls her the dummy
o Doctor tries talking to uncle about sending her to school
o Aggie is the aunt and Belinda is the deaf girl
o Father and aunt keep her secluded from the town, but she was out during a dance
and now wants to learn to dance
o Stella and Locky are a couple
o Locky got drunk at a party and took a violin to Belinda’s house so she could
dance, he ends up kissing her and other things
o Father’s name is Mac
o Doctor (Robert) taking her to see a Doctor Gray in McGill
o Belinda is pregnant because of Locky
o Aunt, father, and doctor take her to church on Sunday and the whole town just
stares at her
o Locky walks into church and Belinda gets sad/withdrawn and doctor notices
o Stella and McCormick are getting married, but Stella is in love with the doctor (I
think)
o Doctor tells Belinda she’s going to be a mother and she’s happy about it, wants to
name it Johnny, but doesn’t tell anyone that it is Locky’s
o Baby is a boy
o Locky is telling the town that the doctor is the father of Johnny
o Locky showed up at the house and Mac found out that Locky’s the father, chases
after him to fight and Locky beat Mac up, pushed him off the ledge and Mac dies
o Doctor moves away, but finds a house for him, Belinda, Johnny and Aggie
o The town is talking about taking Johnny away from Belinda because she “can’t
take care of him” and giving him to Locky and Stella
o Locky tells Stella that the baby is his and goes inside the house to take the babe
and Belinda shoots Locky
o Belinda goes on trial for the murder of Locky
