- External Conflict
o Character vs. Character
▪ Main character has a conflict with another character in the story
o Character vs. Nature
▪ Conflict with weather, animals, other things in nature, etc.
▪ Firefighter vs. Fire
o Character vs. Society
▪ Character has conflict with society’s perspective and not deaf perspective
▪ Society’s expectations of character

- Internal Conflict

Connections between Plot and Conflict
- The plot and character presented in the story are inseparable: “Plot is a series not simply
of happenings, but of happenings that come out of the character, that reveal character,
and that influence character” (Cain & Barnet, 2011, p. 132).
- The plot has no “raison d’etre” without the conflict
- Raison D’etre: the most important reason or purpose for someone or something's
existence
Excerpt of “No Sound” by Julius Wiggins
- Main Point of Story: deaf people don’t need a hearing aid to live a successful life

o Co-workers (writing offensive comments on a paper resulted in getting fired)

- Character vs. Society
o Societal views on CI’s, speaking, etc.
- Character vs. Machine/Technology

o Technology at work, subway, in his environment

in with who his family wants him to become
“Noisy House” by Melissa Whalen
