In this journal I will be identify the basic goals and types of foreign policy and
explain the roles of Congress, the president, and the executive branch in making foreign policy
and explain how global and domestic pressures shape American foreign policy. I will also
describe the strategies and instruments used to address foreign policy issues and summarize the
foreign policy challenges facing the United States today and describe the tension between
national security and democracy and what it means for citizens.
To start off I will be talking about foreign policy which is an Official U.S. policy
designed to solve problems that take place between us and actors outside our borders and
isolationism. An isolationism which is a foreign policy view that nations should stay out of
international political alliances and activities and focus on domestic matters. In the foreign policy
internationalism is a foreign policy view that the United States should actively engage in world
affairs in order to try to shape events in accordance with U.S. interests. In order to understand the
foreign policy U.S. government’s goals and actions directed toward actors outside our borders
and the outward focus separates foreign policy from domestic policy, although sometimes the
distinction between foreign and domestic policy is not so clear. The post-cold war setting of
American foreign policy which is a Cold War was waged between the United States and the
Soviet Union from 1947 to 1989.The policy of containment is the united states tried to prevent
the Soviet Union from expanding its influence, especially in Europe.
The crisis policy the threat to national interest are the limited time to respond, come
about as a surprise and often with use-of-force implications. Principal actors are president and
advisers. Visibility of policymaking is low; involvement of Congress is informal. Designed to
assert and implement the basic military and foreign policy stance of the United States toward
others. Involves primarily executive branch members and agencies. Public debate and
congressional involvement usually occur after the formal decisions are announced.
The structural defense policy is the Defense spending policies and programs and Policy
process usually centered in Congress with Pentagon and Defense contracts and interest groups.
Congress and foreign policy have authority through the following and ratify treaties, confirm
appointment, declare war, exercise spending power and oversee executive branch. Declarations
of war are increasingly uncommon. The War Powers Act attempted to limit presidential authority
in this area President must notify Congress if troops are moved into hostilities or where
hostilities are imminent. Those troops can stay for only 60 days unless Congress passes a
specific authorization. Anarchy is a theory of politics that holds that there should be no laws at
all and International laws are effective only to the degree that nations agree to be bound by them.
Terrorism which is an act of violence that specifically targets innocent civilians for the
purpose of provoking widespread fear that will force government to change its policies. The
future of NATO which was formed in 1949 and dominated by the United States, was designed to
