Document Summary

Amino (nh3. ) acts as a base- tends to attract a proton to form. The amino group acts as a base because the amino group can pick up a hydrogen ion (h+) from the solution. Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, have amino and carboxyl groups. A sulfhydryl group ( sh) consists of a sulfur atom bonded to a hydrogen atom and to the backbone. Phosphate group is important when u put a series of phosphate groups next to each other. Sulfhydryl allows covalent bonds to be made and secure the structure polypeptides. Lipids: carbon containing compounds found in all organisms that are largely non- polar. Lipids are not actually considered macromolecule because they are not made of repeating units like proteins (whose repeating units are amino acids) or nucleic acids (whose are nucleotides). Lipids (fats, steroids, phospholipids) are clustered together in the same category because they are all relatively non-polar. Unlike other macromolecules, lipids do not form polymers.
